Construction Commences on City Walk BHAM

Birmingham’s newest destination will transform the area within the I-59/20 corridor into an environment that connects the city like never before.

BIRMINGHAM – The recent completion of Birmingham’s I-59/20 Central Business District (CBD) Interstate bridges brings about renewed focus on the space underneath the bridges known as City Walk BHAM. City Walk BHAM is a 31-acre project, which will span 10 city blocks, from 15th Street North to 25th Street North – almost a mile in length – and will include recreational, art, performance, sports and green spaces; a skate park facility; market areas; a dog park and more. Brasfield and Gorrie, LLC, one of the nation’s largest privately held construction firms, is the contractor working on this project. As the Official Construction Partner of The World Games 2022, Brasfield and Gorrie is committed to finishing a portion of City Walk BHAM prior to The World Games 2022, which will take place next July, and will be deploying three crews to work to meet the accelerated timeline. The total project is scheduled for completion in 425 days.

Once the project is complete, daily operations and facility maintenance will be managed by BJCC. “The BJCC is proud to partner with ALDOT to assume ongoing operations and maintenance of City Walk BHAM upon its completion,” said Tad Snider, executive director and CEO, BJCC Authority. “It’s a natural fit for the BJCC, not just because of proximity, but because our team has key experience managing this sort of multi-attraction destination. We’re excited to see it taking shape all around us, and we look forward to welcoming visitors to City Walk BHAM later next year,” Snider said.

“It’s a remarkable time for our city, with the upcoming completion of Protective Stadium and the modernization of Legacy Arena. City Walk BHAM will be the third major attraction to come online on or around our complex in a twelve-month period,” said Dennis Lathem, chairman, BJCC board of directors. “City Walk BHAM is a perfect complement to the BJCC’s family of facilities, particularly the Uptown entertainment district.”

During the construction period, motorists are requested to consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe work zone speed limits and other work zone signs, and use extreme caution in this area. ALDOT thanks motorists for their patience during this Construction Operation.
